The presence of HDMI 2.1 ports on a new TV doesn’t guarantee that the display supports all of the gaming-specific features you might want to use on current gen consoles. Some TV sets going back as far as 2018 that can support certain HDMI 2.1 features but it’s rare. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X can take advantage of some of the features baked into HDMI 2.1 such as dynamic HDR, enhanced audio return channel (eARC) and two gaming-oriented features: auto low-latency mode (ALLM) and variable refresh rate (VRR). The main selling point of HDMI 2.1 - 4K/120 Hz capability - is an unknown quantity for PS5 and Xbox Series X games. HDR is a huge improvement to picture quality, and it’s one of the most noticeable upgrades you’ll see over the older PlayStation 4 and Xbox One-and if you can get one with HDMI 2.1, all the better. Get a TV if you have a smaller budget, want HDR and a good 4K experience. So, if you get a 1440p monitor, you’re actually going to be playing upscaled 1080p, and that, while not awful, isn’t desirable either. 1080p and 4K are probably the only resolutions that the PS5 will support. 1440p is a PC resolution, and it will likely not be a supported resolution on PS5. People buy gaming monitors over TVs because monitors have lower input lag, faster response times, and higher refresh rates than TVs. Get a Gaming Monitor if you can afford it. Picking a Gaming TV or Monitor can be very stressful considering all the misleading marketing terms, technobabble and specifications that may or may not be important when making a purchase.
